Thinking Machines Corporation

Thinking Machines Corporation

Status:

No longer in the business of building parallel processors.

Overview of Organisation:

TMC was founded in 1983 with the original intention of supplying machines to support AI and symbolic computation. The marketplace began to look for more power later in the decade as AI became less fashionable, and much of TMC's customer base is in the computationally intensive field. The company has taken a new direction from its SIMD approach with the introduction of the CM-5.

There are around 80 machines installed. The company has around 400 staff and turnover of around $100M. Investment in the company is estimated at around $100M.

The machines available are the Connection Machine (CM) range. They are the CM-2, CM-2a, CM-200 and CM-5. The first three are SIMD machines; the last is the newest product and is a hybrid SIMD/MIMD which scales to 2 TFLOPS.

The company has taken an order for the first CM-5 outside USA. CM aim to increase turnover by around 50% per year, and given the recent recession have done a fair job, increasing from $65M to $100M in the last two years. The emphasis is shifting away from the SIMD machines with the introduction of the CM-5. TMC do not expect to sell any CM-200s larger than 8192 nodes, as they expect this to be the point at which to cut to the CM-5 range.

TMC claim to be driven by technology and applications rather than the market. Although initially targeted at symbolic and AI applications, most CMs are being used for computationally intensive scientific problems.

There are about 70 installed CM-2 and CM-200 machines, and 8-9 CM-5s. All the CM-5s are in the USA. The largest CM-5 installed is 1K nodes.
