A disappointment to many participants was the unavoidable conclusion that for general-purpose computing, optical technology is unlikely to provide a path to high-density, high-speed, low-latency logic that can be used in the PetaFLOPS computers. While there may be a role for such devices for very specialized hardwired computing systems, their use as constituent elements of the class of systems targeted is not tenable.
