Barriers/Obstacles

No fundamental obstacle exists to demonstrating the viability of superconducting technology in very high-speed clock rate processors. The opportunities exist to integrate the technology with very high-speed fiber optics or free-space optical links to transfer data from room temperature to the cryogenic system and back out. Optical links would preserve short path lengths while essentially eliminating the thermal conduction penalty. Closed-cycle cooling also can be improved to provide a more commercially attractive support system. There is, finally, the opportunity to develop a fast memory that will be compatible with the processor.
